My Process Overview
01 - Planning and Discovery
My projects begin with gathering requirements and discussing goals with stakeholders and product owners. Then I perform a deep dive audit of the existing product, completing competitor research and analysis. Based on the findings, I make recommendations on how to improve the product in its unique market and outline a process to follow moving forward.
02 - User Research
I collect data through surveys, user interviews, or by utilizing any client-provided demographics or data. I then synthesize the data into personas and use them to create journey maps and/or affinity maps. Afterward, I work out user/task flows. To determine flows, I may use OOUX or card sorting exercises to create relevant and contextual navigation.
03 - User Experience Design
I usually begin by sketching on paper and then creating digital wireframes. Next, I work on the design system, starting with core elements such as colors, type, shadows, and corner radii. Afterward, I move on to designing components, starting with the simple and moving to the more complex.
Once the design system has a solid foundation and the wireframes have been approved, I begin to translate the design system onto the wireframes to create high-fidelity comps. Then, I spend time connecting and animating the prototypes to closely replicate the expected behaviors.
04 - Testing and Validation
When resources are available I conduct user testing, remote or in-person, moderated or unmoderated, depending on the type of users and how accessible they are for testing. I also validate design decisions with both internal and external secondary research methods, especially if the resources for user testing are not available.
05 - Documentation and Handoff
I create documentation outlining the expected behavior and provide additional notes to ensure a clear interpretation of the design system. I also lead meetings with developers, product owners, and project managers to ensure a full understanding of the designs being handed over. If necessary, I assist with writing tickets as well. Once development has begun, I conduct design audits to ensure that the designs are being implemented as planned.
